  • Every session is open to complete beginners — you will be paired with someone who will look after you.
  • Wear shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. Wrestling boots are useful later, not on day one.
  • Bring a water bottle. Remove earrings, watches and any jewellery before you step on the mat.
  • Parents are welcome to stay and watch the whole session.

Coach Yaser Mallah of Unity Wrestling, Gateshead

Meet the coach

Yaser Mallah

Head Coach, Unity Wrestling

  • Iranian Premier League wrestler
  • Iranian First-Class Coaching Qualification
  • UK Level 2 Coach
  • Coached national gold medallists
  • 60+ students coached in Iran

Yaser Mallah wrestled professionally in the Iranian premier league — the toughest domestic wrestling competition in the world, in the country that has produced more world and Olympic champions than any other.

Before moving to the North East he ran his own wrestling clubs in Iran, coaching more than 60 students at a time, from first-timers through to national-level competitors. Several of his athletes have gone on to win national gold medals.

He now brings that same standard to Gateshead. Sessions are serious about technique and completely unserious about ego: beginners get the same attention as the competition squad, and everybody trains as one team.

“Wrestling gives you discipline, confidence and a family. It does not matter where you start — it matters that you keep coming back.”

New to wrestling?

Almost everyone at Unity Wrestling walked in having never wrestled before. Here is exactly what happens when you do.

  • You do not need to be fit first

You get fit by wrestling, not before it. Come as you are and work at your own pace — nobody is going to run you into the ground on day one.

  • You do not need any kit

Shorts or leggings, a t-shirt, and a water bottle. That is it. If you stick with it we will point you at boots and a singlet later on.

  • Your first session is free

Come and try it before you commit to anything. No sign-up, no pressure, no awkward sales chat at the end.

  • Everyone trains together

Children, teenagers and adults share the same mat and the same coach, matched carefully by size and experience. Nobody is ever put in front of someone they cannot handle.

  • Nobody is throwing punches

There are no strikes in wrestling. It is a controlled sport built on grip, balance and technique — you learn how to fall safely before you learn anything else, and the coach is on the mat with you throughout.

  • A clean mat, every session

The mats are swept and disinfected around every session, and the gym is kept clean as a matter of routine. It is a shared contact sport and we treat hygiene as part of the coaching, not an afterthought.

  • Women and girls train here too

The club is genuinely open to everyone. Women and girls train alongside everybody else — including wrestlers who have won national medals — and you will not be the only one on the mat.

  • Compete if you want to, not because you have to

Plenty of our members compete, and the club has national and international medallists among them. Just as many never enter a competition and simply train. Both are completely normal here.

  • Parents, you are welcome to stay

Sit at the side and watch the whole session. The club is DBS-checked and affiliated to British Wrestling, the sport’s national governing body, and coached by a qualified UK Level 2 coach.

Common questions

Anything not covered here — just ask. No question is too basic.

What age can children start wrestling?

We take children from 9 years old upwards. If your child is a little younger and keen, bring them down anyway and we will see how they get on — we would rather meet them than turn them away on a number.

Do I need to book before I come?

No. Just turn up to any session on the timetable. It helps if you message us first on Instagram so we know to look out for you, but it is not required.

How much does it cost?

Your first session is free. After that it is £50 a month for the Tuesday, Friday and Sunday sessions, or £10 for a one-off session. Saturdays are pay as you go at £10 a session.

Do you offer private one-to-one lessons?

Yes. Coach Yaser offers one-to-one coaching alongside the club sessions, for beginners who want a gentler start and for competitors working on something specific. Message him on Instagram to arrange it.

Is this the same as WWE wrestling?

No. We coach Olympic freestyle wrestling — the sport contested at the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games, governed in this country by British Wrestling.
